Dartmouth’s Remarkable Residents – A Guide to the Town’s Blue Plaques

Mar 14, 2025

Dartmouth is not just a feast for the eyes but also a treasure trove of history. Scattered across its charming streets are blue plaques, celebrating the lives of notable individuals who once called this town home.

What are Blue Plaques?

Blue plaques are permanent, blue-colored signs installed on buildings in public places to commemorate a link between that location and a famous person, event, or former building, serving as a historical marker. In Dartmouth these plaques provide fascinating glimpses into the town’s rich past, connecting visitors to stories of innovation, bravery, and creativity.

Thomas Newcomen: The Steam Pioneer

One of Dartmouth’s most celebrated figures is Thomas Newcomen (1664–1729), the inventor of the atmospheric steam engine. Born in the town, Newcomen revolutionized mining and industry with his invention—the first successful steam-powered pumping engine. Experts now consider this the start of the industrial revolution. A plaque commemorates his contributions, and visitors can see one of his engines working in Dartmouth today at the Dartmouth Visitor Centre.

Dartmouth Blue Plaques - Flora Thompson

Flora Thompson: Literary Legacy

Flora Thompson (1876–1947), author of Lark Rise to Candleford, lived in Dartmouth’s Above Town between 1928 and 1940. During her time here, she penned much of her famous trilogy, capturing rural English life with vivid detail. Her plaque marks her residence and serves as a reminder of her literary achievements

Theodore Veale: A Heroic Soldier

Theodore Veale (1892–1980), a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his bravery during World War I, is another distinguished resident honoured with a blue plaque. Born in Dartmouth he was just 23 years old serving in the Devonshire Regiment, when he rescued an injured colleague who had fallen on the open battlefield. Veale’s courageous actions are remembered as part of Dartmouth’s proud heritage.
