The Story of Dartmouth Old Market

Dartmouth’s Old Market was originally set up to accommodate the pannier style of market almost exclusive to Devon. Dating back to medieval times, pannier markets were a chance for local folk to bring their fresh produce on a daily basis to sell in the nearest town. The name was derived from the pannier baskets placed on ponies that would both carry the produce and act as the ‘shop shelf’ if required.

In the 19th Century, many towns across Devon built covered areas in which to hold these markets, and Dartmouth followed this trend with the Old Market opening in 1828. Unusually, the Dartmouth market was not entirely roofed, as it was built in a quad around the former Market Court House, which still stands in the middle today.

In 1946 the buildings were granted Grade II listed building status meaning the authentic feel is protected for future generations. That does not, however, mean Dartmouth’s Old Market has stood still. Three of the four parts of the quad now house small but modern retail units, and these are sought after by small businesses looking for a low level entry point onto the ‘high street’. Some previously ran stalls in the market, with the units proving a helpful step up to a more permanent arrangement.

The remaining pannier markets in Devon continue to blend a cultural and heritage experience with a local flavour across the businesses there. With its solid white walls, low archway entrances, cobbled paving, and blend of old and new, Dartmouth Old Market has to be part of any visit to our beautiful town.

A Market Full of Character

Markets have always been characterful places, from the buildings and the vendors they attract to providing a location and opportunity to get together and chew over the local news. Both these things are still true today, as anyone who spends time here can see.

Jenny Koo, who runs her eponymous Kitchen Café, is a longstanding business owner in the Market and well known in Dartmouth. Her award winning cream teas sit on the menu alongside dishes that reflect her Asian roots, and she is always ready to give visitors ideas on how to enjoy their visit to Dartmouth.

Otok is a wonderful new addition to the market, bringing a florist back to Dartmouth. Owner, Alexandra hails from Australia and deliberately chose Dartmouth for her business because she wanted to be part of a community. With a ready smile and enthusiasm for her craft, she is already making herself at home in the Old Market.

The eye-catching and colourful Foxx Exchange fashion store attracts plenty of attention among those wanting a bit of retail therapy. Owner Tracy is always ready to advise on outfits and how to add those finishing touches that make the difference.

Of course, there are plenty more businesses to consider – but we’ll let you discover those for yourselves.
