D-Day Events

June 6

Dartmouth & District played a key role in the planning of D-Day. In April we remembered Exercise Tiger, which was a practice of the D-Day landings at Slapton Sands.

Dartmouth will mark the D-Day landings on Thursday 6th June with three key events:

  • 10.50am Proclamation by the Town Crier
  • 11.00am Short memorial service at the D-Day Memorial on the North Embankment
  • Unveiling of the hand-carved wooden statue of WW2 Commando with wreath laying

The steam trains coming into Kingswear between 4-6 June will be pulled by USATC S160 2-8-0 No. 2253 Omaha.

7pm June 6th Kingswear Church: service of remembrance and thanksgiving, followed by refreshments

9.15pm Beacons lit at Strete and Kingswear Church Memorial Gardens

We have some books in the Visitors Centre from Dartmouth History Research Group, which tell stories of Dartmouth’s role in D-Day preparations and the wars.
