Step back in time and explore the fascinating Dartmouth Castle, where children can learn about history while enjoying the stunning views of the estuary. The castle’s rich history makes it one of the top Dartmouth activities for families.
Situated where the River Dart meets the English Channel, work on Dartmouth Castle started in 1388 to protect the town and harbor from French raids during the Hundred Years War. A century later, it was fortified with a gun tower, making it the first purpose-built coastal artillery fort in Britain.

Why not spend a sunny afternoon crabbing on Dartmouth’s quayside. All you need is a bucket, a line, and some bait to start this fun and engaging activity. Hold a friendly crabbing competition to see who can catch the most! This simple yet exciting activity offers hours of entertainment.
A few tips for keeping the Crabs (and locals) happy while crabbing in Dartmouth include:
- Make sure to catch and release, keeping too many Crabs in your bucket can lead to Crabs becoming aggressive and fighting

- Dispose of any unwanted buckets and crab lines responsibly
- Crabbing is best enjoyed as the tide begins to rise and be sure to watch out for sneaky Seagulls who are after a snack.
